I have been thinking about starting a master's program for a few years, but the timing was always off. A few years back, I almost started one through Full Sail because one of my teachers in a position I wanted to go into recommended it. Luckily, I discovered it was not accredited and backed out. Shortly after I got married and moved to Fort Worth, and I didn’t want to start a master’s program during my first year at a new district. The following year I moved districts, and my second year in Fort Worth was again my first year at a new district. Finally, with the help of my wife doing research to find an accredited program, she recommended the Applied Digital Learning program at Lamar University.
Starting this master’s degree was daunting because I have been a student since 2011, when I received my teacher training. Fortunately, I was able to start the first two classes during the summer of 2024, which let me focus on the classes with little distraction from having to prepare and teach classes. Being able to attend Zoom classes and complete a literature review during a cruise to Iceland makes me confident I can juggle anything that happens during this master’s degree. Now that I have two courses down, I feel prepared and have already been set on a path to successfully complete the remaining classes in this master’s program.
In a moment of fortuitous coincidence, I realized that for many years, I have been building an online portfolio that I can simply add to satisfy the requirement of creating an ePortfolio for this master’s degree. I am looking forward to learning and growing in my innovation as an effective educator who promotes student creations that can be utilized after graduation and during a job search.
