Blum, S. D., Kohn, A., & Saffel, T. (2020). Ungrading: Why rating students undermines learning (and

what to do instead) (1st ed.). West Virginia University Press. 

Ungrading, details the diverse experience of fifteen educators who opt out of grades. Contributors are from multiple disciples, spanning across both higher education and K-12. The book is based on rigorous research, and focuses on the learning at the center, rather than grades, making the book an example of both the challenges and the transformative action in ungrading.

 

Collins, A., & Halverson, R. (2009). Rethinking education in the age of technology: The digital

revolution and schooling in America. New York, NY: Teachers College Press.

Authors Collins and Halverson give ideas on how to move learners beyond the walls of the classroom. They examine the effective use of social learning networks and distance learning programs. The book calls for an education transformation due to technology, which has the potential to motivate teachers to use technology for a beneficial purpose.

 

Couros, G. (2015). The innovator’s mindset: Empower learning, unleash talent, and lead a culture

of creativity. San Diego, CA: Dave Burgess Consulting, Inc.

In Couros book, a call to action is pointed towards educators in a manner that argues for the need to change their mindset. With an innovative mindset, educators can arm themselves with a different way to teach students, something needed to bring innovative practices into schools. The importance of leadership is also discussed, a necessary component for innovation. This book will serve as a useful tool to obtain strategies for bringing innovation into schools.

 

Grenny, J., Patterson, K., Maxfield, D., McMillan, R., & Switzler, A. (2013). Influencer: The new

science of leading change. McGraw Hill. 

Influencer expands on what it means to be an influencer, capable of leading change. Readers are presented with anecdotal examples of people who are described as “insignificant,” yet through changes in their behavior are able to make significant improvements. This will serve as an inspirational tool for educators who feel unable or uncomfortable with initiating change.  

 

Robinson, K., & Aronica, L. (2016). Creative schools: The grassroots revolution that's transforming

education. New York, NY: Penguin Books.

Robinson & Aronica encourage readers to be leaders in the transformation of education. Through their use of anecdotes, observations, and well crafted professional recommendations, readers can feel encouraged and capable of leading change. The goal is to create authentic approaches to engage learners while allowing them to develop skills necessary for the 21st century learner. 

 

Yancey, K. B. (2019). EPortfolio as curriculum: Models and practices for Developing Students’

ePortfolio Literacy. Routledge. 

Yancy provides faculty, staff, and administrators with a framework useful for guiding students in the design and creation process of the ePortfolio. The purpose and effectiveness of the ePortfolio is clearly communicated and the book provides guidance on how to support and develop student ePortfolio literacy. This will be useful for helping recognize the impact of the ePortfolio and in developing reflective practices and taking ownership of one’s learning.
